How Should You Paint Or Preserve Your Gate?

Wood like all exterior products will during its life span require you to protect it against the varying
weather conditions it is subjected to.

The most popular wood choices for our wooden gates are Accoya and Iroko.

Accoya is an engineered timber (which when fabricated and installed by ourselves comes with a
50 year rot free guarantee) and Iroko is an African hardwood. Both woods require different
treatments to aid in their protection. You should ensure that check the best course of action for
your wooden gates prior to carrying out any work to them, like everything each wood type
requires different treatments.

With our Accoya gates these can be painted or preserved, the Iroko can only have an oil applied
to it.

Whilst our gates are treated with either paint, oil or preservative prior to installation if you have
purchased your own gates we would recommend treating them before they are installed. By doing
so you will ensure that you achieve an even coverage over the whole of the gate (top and bottom
too) and it is also easier for you this way.

You should ensure to read the manufacturers guidance on the product prior to applying. Also
ensure you have a suitable brush to use with the product, these can be purchased from most DIY
or paint supply stores.

How To Apply:

Before applying any product to your gate please ensure that you have wiped and brushed the
gate clean first, in some instance you may need to sand the gate. If you do need to sand the gate,
please check that no residue has been left on the gate, you do not want this to be caught in your
paint, preservative or oil as it will spoil the finished look.

When applying your product be sure to cover any gaps or edges with the product, this includes
between any T&G boards. Try to apply the products in sections although if the gate is large you
may want to complete one half before the other.

Once you have applied the product to prevent any drip marks or brush strokes use a small paint
roller to remove excess product.

Whilst you should review the recommended drying time for the product on any packaging it is
best to allow 24 hours before applying your next coat.

A minimum of two coats is recommended but three can be applied.
